MANY of Ireland’s finest butchers went head-to-head this month in the sixth All Ireland Speciality Fine Food & Butchery Awards, organised by butchery members’ association, Butchery Excellence International.

The competition saw local butchers, Jonathan Brown and Dermot Grogan, from Grogan & Brown Artisan Butchers Kilkenny, walk away with a host of titles, including overall title of ‘Speciality Fine Foods Champion’ sponsored by Rational UK.

Grogan & Brown secured a string of awards including gold awards for best ready meal ‘Chicken Italiano’ and best Festive products ‘Italian Christmas Porchetto and Dry Aged Prime Roast of Beef’.  They also took golds home for best cook in the bag product ‘Smokey Pulled Shoulder’ and ‘Irish Spiced Beef’.

Open to all independent butchers across Ireland, the competition reinforces the quality of speciality foods provided by butchers here in Ireland, just ahead of the important festive season this Christmas.

For Grogan & Brown, receiving the title of All Ireland Speciality Fine Foods Champion will give their shop and their fine food products extra kudos with customers.  The win will hopefully attract new custom to their store and for current customers, they can be confident that they’re purchasing the best festive speciality foods in Kilkenny this Christmas.

An expert judging panel oversaw proceedings, including guest judge & sponsor Sean Bouvette from Rational and Chief Judge Rhonda Montgomery.

Sean Bouvette Guest Judge & Sponsor adds:

“I have never witnessed such innovation & class in a butchery competition ever before in my history as a judge and Butchery Excellence International should be very proud of it’s members for showcasing their products at such a high level”

Grogan & Brown Artisan Butchers from Kilkenny, winner of the ‘All Ireland Speciality Fine Foods’ title said:

“Wining this title is a privilege and it is a credit to our team at Grogan & Brown that we have achieved an accolade of gold awards at this competition.  With Christmas approaching, we are delighted that our produce has been recognised to be the best in Ireland.  Butchers need to be recognised for their innovation and creation in the meat trade and being a member of Butchery Excellence International, helps us to get the recognition we deserve”.

Rhonda Montgomery, Chief Executive of Butchery Excellence International adds:

“We have had an amazing response to sixth speciality fine foods championship competition, with well over 100 entries being received from across Ireland.

“The calibre of the entries has been exceptional and the judges had a tough decision to make in all of the categories. However there could only be one Champion and we would like to congratulate Grogan & Brown Artisan Butchers on becoming our new All Ireland Champion.  I look forward to seeing Jonathan and Dermot compete for title of ‘Best Butcher In Ireland’  in November at our final which is being held on 20th November.”
