Our tour this year is being run in conjunction with the Scottish Craft Butchers to showcase to you the best butchers in Scotland.  We have 19 shops visits planned over a 3 day visit.  The idea of this field trip is to educate you on what butchers are doing in other regions of the UK to give you new product ideas, innovation and look at recent shop fits.  These shops specialise in ready meals, butchery, deli, on line shopping etc.  You are visiting the best butcher shops and supermarkets in Scotland.

Boghall Butchers

This modest neighbourhood butchers tucked away in Boghall punches way above its weight. Its legendary pies have locals queuing and judges at the UK Pie Awards smiling, winning two categories in 2010. Owner Paul Boyle’s pie range is vast, the fillings imaginative. Everything is made on the premises, both savoury and sweet. Add their wholesome ready meals, from lamb casserole to lasagne, plus plenty of fresh veg and fruit, and it is, as they say, all good.

Strachan Craft Butchers Blantyre

A brand new butchers opened today, Saturday 19th May 2018 on Glasgow Road!

The shop was constantly busy with people outside waiting to get in.

Inside, the whole shop oozed a feeling of quality and cleanliness. The tasteful decor complimenting the beautiful, fresh customer displays. Staff were attentive, polite and knowledgeable.

Chapman’s Wishaw

A family butcher established by James Chapman in 1893, his great-grandson and daughter James and Deirdre Chapman now run six shops across Wishaw, Carluke, Motherwell and Cleland, served with meat from the business’s own abattoir. The flagship store in Wishaw has the largest selection, but all stock beef from the family’s cattle farm, with lamb and pork sourced from Scotland and the north of England. Wishaw also has a larger selection of deli foods, including cooked meats, salads and a couple of cheeses, with a more limited selection across the smaller shops. Freshly made pies, sausages, haggis, puddings and sweet baking are distributed from their factory, and they cure their own bacon.  The shop on Wishaw’s Main Street also sells takeaway sandwiches and snacks.

Fergusons of Airdrie

Ferguson’s of Airdrie is a fourth generation family run business, owned by brothers Graeme and Richard Johnston.  The butchers business has been established for over 150 years and is proud to have strong links with local farmers, to ensure freshness and traceability from the farm gate to your plate.

All of our speciality products are made on-site, from our locally sourced stock, by our large team of highly experienced, skilled staff which helps make the atmosphere in our shops welcoming and friendly. Our products are cut, manufactured and baked throughout the day as determined by demand to ensure a superior freshness.

Blairdrummond Smiddy Farm Shop

We take our name from the old smiddy works that once served the local community, reinventing it as a farm shop, butchery and café. A place where people can pick up essentials, try something a little different or just meet for coffee and a bite to eat. We stock as local as possible, selecting farms for their animal welfare standards and the quality of their meat. Our beef comes from Lochfield Farm in Doune, just 3 miles away. Our lamb is from Dunblane and we also stock organic beef from West Moss-side Farm, Thornhill, also 3 miles away. All of our top quality pork is free range and delicious.

Simon Howie, Auchterarder

Simon Howie was born into a farming family in 1967 and has been working in the food and drinks industry since he opened his own shop at 19.  Since being the subject of this Big Profile he has taken his eponymous butchers business to new heights – in 2015 is turned over a massive £14.7m and make a profit of £2.5m before tax.

And he hasn’t stopped there. Nowadays his business interests have expanded into property, laminates and renewable energy companies as part of the Simon Howie Group.  He is also a director of cargo handling for land transport business Calport. Here he explains what has driven him to such successful heights:  Simon Howie is not easy to categorise. A trained butcher by trade, the company he is best known for under his own name supplies meat to supermarkets across the UK and also upmarket hotels like Gleneagles.

Scott Brothers, Dundee

Their Strathmartine Road shop has been completely transformed – and customers got their first glimpse of the new and improved shop at the weekend.  Owner Scott Jarron said: “The shop hadn’t been changed in 18 years and my brother and I felt that it was time to give it a freshen up.  “Our customers’ expectations about their shopping experience has changed and we wanted to set a standard they can expect in all three of our shops that matches our high standard of products.  “Already customers have been blown away by the changes and are delighted with the new shop.”

The Butcher, The Baker

Clark’s, which has been producing snacks for Dundonians since 1950, has lodged a planning application with Dundee City Council to open The Butcher Baker at a unit across from its Annfield Row home.  The move would see the bakery create its own butchery beside the bakery by joining forces with Webster’s in the West End.

Jonathon Clark, the third generation owner of Clark’s, today told the Tele that the motive behind the union with Webster’s butchers is to “keep it local”.  He said: “Should this application be granted, Dundee citizens will be able to confirm that the ham in their sandwich and the mince in their pies is locally sourced.

Puddledub @ Dobbies Dunfermline

The large town of Dunfermline was once capital of Scotland and also sits proudly in the Kingdom of Fife. So how best to reflect this than with a very individual castle inspired façade?

In store, you’ll discover beautiful plants, shrubs, trees and horticulture experts offering our very best gardening advice. There’s also a wonderful range of ideas in homewares, as well as a great restaurant, Deli-bar and in-store butcher to tantalise your tastebuds.

Crombie’s of Edinburgh

Crombies of Edinburgh is an award winning butcher shop established in 1955 by Alex Crombie and now run by father and son team, Sandy and Jonathan Crombie. Our Broughton Street shop is located in the heart of Edinburgh but we’re renowned world-wide for our specialist sausages.

In the mid-eighties, when Jonathan joined his father in running the business, Crombies developed a special interest in sausages, having won a major award in 1985. Success in this field, both at retail and wholesale level, led to the establishment of a specially designed and equipped facility, “The Real Sausage Company”, with an EC Approved Premises rating, entirely dedicated to sausage production.

Today there are over 40 varieties of sausages to choose from, drawn from hundreds of recipes, and the fun of creating them continues.
